The grand master of game fish is considered to be bass fish. Once only common to Eastern United States of America it is now spread throughout the continent and this means people all over can enjoy fly fishing.
Bait selection is simple with bass fishing as they eat pretty much everything. They will go for small bait to larger bait such as mice, frogs etc. When they are looking for food they swim in shallow water and this is the best time to try to catch them. The bass are smart as the hide in secluded spots in the water. When fishing for bass it is best to be quiet so that you do not spook the more jumpy fish.
The bass are around in early spring as that is when they are on the hunt for food. At the beginning of spring they are a bit groggy as the metabolism is rather slow. As they continue to look for food the speed of the metabolism speeds up. Remembering that the bass hide, it is important to be vigilant when fishing for bass. If there are two or more people fishing together one can look for the bass whilst the other person casts the rod in the correct area of the water. The fish change color on ther back and front so one has to be really awake when fly fishing.
The metabolism will increase in direct relation to the ice starting to thaw and as the water heats up.
Spawning will occur when the water temperature is around sixty degrees. This normally occurs in the month of April. The fish inhabit depths of three feet or less. This is while they are fattening up for spawning. The bass are very protective of the territory in which they swim and will protect both territory and food vehemently.
After completing the spawning they will return to deeper water to swim and they will stay there for the entire summer season.
The early hours of the day are the best time to fish for bass. During this time one can use Muddler Minnows and the like in order to lure their prey. At this time they will be swimming in the depths of between one to three feet of water.
In spring time and the late afternoon and early evening bait is switched to floating bass bugs. The bass cannot resist the temptation to bite on your line. When doing this make sure you hold the rod correctly as you may not be quick enough to pull your fish in.
Do not wait long for a bite, in fact it should be less than a minute before something happens. If there is no bite then draw the rod in a stop go fashion, this action will almost certainly entice the bass to take a bite. All of this makes bass fly fishing a great deal of fun and a really great method of relaxing.
